The Circle
1
“So guys what do you want to do tonight?” I asked the circle. The circle is the group of friends or click that I belong to. You know how it is in high school, everyone belongs to a certain group of friends, or click as I call it. Take a moment and think, what click do you belong to? I think I have figured out all of the clicks there are, unless you belong to some kind of make out with chickens click. But hey, whatever floats your boat. I know there are the Goths, punks, rednecks, haters, skaters, oh god I’m rhyming, anyway you get the picture. I am a part of the drama geek/Goth/supernatural click. I know you are probably sitting there in your chair or where ever it is that you are reading this book at, maybe the mall, toilet, or tub. I don’t care where you are reading it, as long as you are reading it! You must be thinking to yourself, geez that is some odd guy, I mean he must be some kind of freak belonging to all those groups, but really I’m just a normal high school teenager. I love Halloween and drama, Goth is just the music I listen to. Now prepare yourself, you are about to witness a paradox in action. For all of you numb-skulls who don’t know what a paradox is:
Paradox- something that contradicts itself.
I can almost guarantee myself that you just sit there and made a mental picture of this dude with long black hair, black baggy clothes from Hot Topic, wearing a Marylyn Manson shirt, and a million tattoos and facial piercing, right? Well you are wrong. I am actually the exact opposite of that. I am about 5 foot 10 inches, I have hazel eyes and dark brown hair. Not your average Goth person huh? I am also in orchestra, yea you heard me- orchestra. I play the cello. Right there did you see it? That was the grand and glorius5285 paradox- I listen to heavy metal and I play classical music. Its wonderful to be different.
Now back to the story, you have heard enough about me for now. My friends and I all love Halloween, and when I say love I mean obsessed. Three of my friends think they are vampires- well they know they are vampires. Or that’s what they tell me anyway, I think they have had to much candy, but whatever. Speaking of candy, they were going around school not to long ago carrying around vials of blood and licking it. I was told it was blood from my friends boyfriend. So I got kind of scared about all of the diseases that are out there, and vampire or not, AIDS can kill! So I went to the guidance counselor about it, and she called them down to talk about why they were doing it, and come to find out it was cherry flavored candy. What a relief it was to me, but I felt like such a dumb ass after it was all over and done with.
Now let me tell you a little about my friends, beside the fact that most of them wither believe they are vampires, Lycanthropes, (you have to say lycanthrope instead of werewolf or Kristine gets offended), witches, or a nun. Yes, nun- imagine how well she fits in. I am just a kind person who gives all of these mentally deranged people a home, and someone they can talk to, other than themselves, however, I honestly believe they could all have a very decent conversation with themselves if I were to let them. They would become old quickly, the conversation, not them, if all they talked about was themselves!
Anywho, moving on. I stay after school almost everyday doing community service work because I got in trouble with the law, don’t ask why, That’s another book. I was leaving school to come here, the coffee shop, where my friends and I meet and hangout, when it happened. I was walking through the auditorium to exit the stage left door, where I heard what sounded like a duck. Now don’t laugh, I was getting kind of freaked out. But then, it hit me in the head like a brick. Someone was playing a trick on me, trying to freak me out. So I shouted “Hey, whoever you are, you can’t scare me!” “I don’t want to scare anyone, I just want a friend”, she said. I slowly turned around, dreading what I was going to see, because I knew there was no one there when I walked onto stage, and I was center stage, so no one could have snuck up behind me. I finally worked up enough nerve and just spun around- nothing was there. I let out a long thankful sigh, when I felt it, someone tugging on my shirt. I said “screw it”, and ran for the door. Now that I think about it, I ran, and ran, and ran. I did not stop until I made it here, where this story actually begins.
“I don’t know, baby doll, whatever you want to do,” Mary-Anna said. “I think we should go and summon her spirit, see what she wants, and then send her on her way,” Jordan remarked. “Well yes, that does sound like fun, but who would be the medium?”, asked Melissa. As Jordan put her are around Melissa, she realized what was coming. And she was not very happy with it. We all had to grab her hands and feet to drag her into the auditorium, all the while she was protesting and hissing and threatening to bite us. We did not care, however, I don’t think it was worth all the work to get her down there. We all stopped in front of the main auditorium doors and let Melissa go, she landed on the floor with a soft thud. Seeing how Melissa is only about 4 foot tall and weighs about 75 pounds, I’m surprised she made any noise at all. I opened the door, I pulled it open slowly, to give it that creepy dramatic effect, you know what I’m talking about. The one they use in the horror movies…well not this door, it seems to be very well oiled. Inside we could see…nothing. It was completely black. And silent as the dead. Haha I just made a funny… oh fine don’t laugh at my jokes… jerk. We picked Melissa up an pushed her inside, I felt on the wall for the light control panel, I found it and pressed a button. A single white dim light came on. It was not much, but it let us see our surroundings and the stage. That is where we wanted to go. We all walked on stage and formed a circle, I ran to the prop room in the back to gather some candles. Once I had retrieved 9 candles I placed them in a circle out side of our circle. This is known as the circle of protection. Hey, I have read enough books about magic and raising the dead to know how to perform a proper séance. Melissa had already taken her place in the center of the circle, she was sitting Indian style, meditating. “Does anyone have a lighter?” I asked. Mary-Anna started looking through her purse and everyone else nodded a silent “no”. “let me do it”, said Melissa. “What? How are you going to light the candles with out a light-” I cut myself off when I noticed the soft golden glow appear on Melissa’s face, a glow that was not present two seconds before. “How…but it was…what…” I was at a loss for words, thankfully Mary-Anna intervened. “What he is trying to say, how in the hell did you do that? I think this is a question we would all like to have answered!” “Well I was reading about witchcraft, and how to harness you inner powers. I performed a small short ritual, and behold… I am all powerful!” she said, followed by a short but victorious giggle. “Wait-what? You’re a … a … witch?” I asked, hardly believing what I was seeing and hearing. “ In the flesh.” She said while dramatically swishing her hands in front of her face, in the manner a stage magician would when he makes a lion appear. “Oh what, you don’t believe me?” silence. “Fine, don’t believe me. Lets just get this séance over with.” At that moment something happened I swore was never possible. Melissa floated above the stage floor, her legs still Indian style, then she unfolded her legs so she was standing up right again. “You have to teach me how you did that!” Mary-Anna said. “Later, now we have a ghost to summon. Dalton, are you going to lead the séance or would you like me too?” “Umm… I will do it. Everyone gather hands, except Melissa you are in the center. Bow your heads. Now first of all we need to be relaxed, so take 5 deep breaths, clearing your mind off all thoughts. Ok now we must invoke protection on this sacred circle of power. Everyone repeat after me. God of thunder, lightning and air, protect us. Protect us. Protect us. So mote it be.” after the last “us” had been said, one by one each of the black candle flames turned pink. It had worked. We were now protected. “Ok good, we are protected so nothing bad can happen. It would be better if we had some privacy, but no one can leave the circle or the magic will be broken for one moons cycle. Melissa, do you care?” I asked. Obviously she didn’t because the grand drapes began to close. I think this is something I can defiantly get used to! “Thank you. No would everyone please extend their left hand, palm up, facing Melissa like a stop sign. Good, now feel the magic began to course from the center of your soul, visualize it in your minds eye flowing from your palm and striking Melissa. Now that everyone is doing that repeat after me.” I closed my eyes and began visualizing the magic also. “ Ancient spirits and magic forces unknown, I summon the to commune with me. Taking the open vessel we offer you here. On the count of three you will come into thee. 1.….2...3” When we said three, a gush of wind entered into the circle blowing our clothes wildly, the fames did not flinch, instead they turned a crimson green, then blue. Melissa was hovering above the floor her head bowed, it appeared as if she was glowing and unearthly white. “Melissa? Are you ok?” Jordan asked. Melissa lifted up her head slowly. Her eyes were pure white, and they were glowing. When she spoke her words sent chills down my spine, it was not her voice, but that of a demon. low and raspy. “Melissa is currently out of this dimension, please call back in one million years.” Jordan, Mary-Anna and I all exchanged scared looks. “Come on guys we need to send this spirit on, we can’t help her.” I said. “Send me on? I think not.” at that moment the temperature dropped form about 60 to at least -10. We could all see our breath. I was very freaked out now. “Everyone gather hands…NOW! Repeat after me. Spirit that is with us leave thee on the count of three you will flee! 1..2..3”

I woke up outside in the hallway Melissa, Mary-Anna, Jordan, and Kristine were standing over me their hands stretched out mumbling some words I could not understand. “Oh thank goodness you are ok!” Mary-Anna said as she bent down to hug me. “What happened in there?” I asked. “You passed out after you tried to kill me.” Melissa said. “What? I tried to kill you?” I asked. “Yes, you threw fire balls at her.” Jordan said. “Oh God, how? I’m not a witch.” I said. “Well you did it…”Said Mary-Anna. “Nut I don’t remember doing anything, just saying three” I said as I tried to get up. I yelled in pain and fell back in pain. “What’s wrong?” Jordan asked. “My…my back, it burns..” “Roll over.” Mary-Anna demanded. I tried but I could not do it. Next thing I know I was lying on my stomach. I felt as if someone had just picked me up and threw me on the ceiling. When I opened my eyes, I could see why. The entire room had been flipped, I was lying on the ceiling. Then my upper torso got cold. My shirt had just vanished. I saw Melissa holding it. Damn magic. “You have scratch marks all over your lower back. Let me heel them.” Melissa bent over me and placed her hands on my wounds. I felt a fire run from her fingertips throughout my body, it burnt for two second, then it was gone. I felt like I was swimming in cotton candy, it felt very nice. “Done.” She said. Whoosh. I was back on my back. The room was back to normal. There was an emptiness in me though, like something I needed was missing. I had no idea what It could be though. I just let it slip from my mind as the girls came down and embraced me. I stood up when Mary Anna gave me another hug. This hug was different though. It had something special in it. I felt my hands be drawn like magnets to her back then I felt…energy flowing from her into me. She screamed in pain, and fell to her knees. Dead. “Oh my God! What just happened?” I said. “I don’t know stand back and I will bring her back. Earth, wind, fire and air, let the spirit soar into there.” She chanted. A large spiral or golden light came cascading form the ceiling and hit Mary Anna in the back. She gasped for breath as she came back to life. |
